Overview

Newly renovated in August 2002, The Cavenagh (previously the Don Hotel) offers absolutely the best budget accommodation in Darwin.

Newly renovated in August 2002, The Cavenagh (previously the Don Hotel) offers absolutely the best budget accommodation in Darwin. Located in the heart of the city, The Cavenagh is a stone's throw from the bustling Smith Street Mall, State Square and the city's main shopping and nightclub precinct.

Darwin, the Territory's capital, is the northern gateway to Australia and is an excellent base from which to explore the Northern Territory. Options abound, with both the Litchfield National Park and the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park close by. The better-known Kakadu covers some 20,000 square kilometers of woodland and forest including the Arnhem Land escarpment and is widely recognized as Australia's most spectacular and beautiful National Park. Aboriginal rock art along with waterfalls and huge wildlife-filled flood plains make this a truly memorable place to visit.

Closer to home, the Fannie Bay waterfront and nearby Cullen Bay, along with Darwin's beautiful harbor, are favored spots to enjoy the spectacular Territory sunsets. Being located on the beautiful Arafura Sea, Darwin offers a huge range of water-related activities…take a cruise, go sailing, diving or fish for barramundi. Every Thursday join around 10,000 people at the very popular Mindal Beach market and browse the craft stalls featuring locally made and Asian crafts and cuisine from all over Asia.

Darwin's Botanical Gardens have over 400 species of the Top End's tropical plants on display as well as a giant amphitheatre where the local population enjoy outdoor concerts. Important collections of Aboriginal, Balinese and New Guinean artifacts can be viewed at the Museum of Arts and Sciences along with the works of Australia's most famous artists.

Wartime memorabilia can be found at the Artillery Museum located in a World War II command blockhouse in Darwin. Darwin's Chinese temple is another notable attraction. Darwin also hosts two of the Territory's oddest annual events...the Beer Can Regatta in June, when vessels constructed almost entirely of beer cans race on Darwin Harbor, and the Mud Crab Tying Championships in August when contestants use their bare hands (and feet) to deftly tie up huge mud crabs.

So come on in to the Cavenagh and say G'day! Our friendly team will make sure your stay in Darwin will be something to remember!
