Liked: nice lay out, well kept, lots of area to relax and socialize with other travellers. Loved that there were no bunk-beds! comfortable beds and very nice linens. Staff was amazing and very helpful!

Liked: It's a great hostel, it's so familiar and everyone is nice and friendly. Whatever you need the staff helps you. It was really cheap and you get a lot for your money (free breakfast, dinner, internet...). Especially Mad Mondays and Friday BBQs are great fun.

Disliked: The rooms, kitchen and bathrooms may have been more cleaner- but it was ok.

Liked: Awesome hostel. I have stayed in around 50 hostels world wide and the Asylum is certainly in the top 2 or 3.Staff (Wardens) and residents (inmates) are extremely friendly and create a very social hostel environment.The wardens organises some very fun, good value for money activities for inmates including (in my view) the highlights of Mad Monday and $4 Friday all you can eat BBQ. The wardens are also more than happy to suggest day tours / other things to do around town.Accommodation includes a decent basic dinner at the Woolshed, which is very good considering it is 'free', inmates can also elect to upgrade to a main meal (steak, pizza e.t.c.) for a very reasonable amount (about $5 depending on what you order).Recently stayed here for 9 nights, and will definitely stay here again next time I am in Cairns.Highly recommended.

Liked: At first, this hostel seems a bit intimidating. After spending two nights here, I fell in love. The people are so friendly and the staff is willing to bend over backwards to satisfy everyone. This is not just a hostel, it's a home. Recommended for outgoing friendly people who like to have a few social drinks at night. Great hostel, I'll be back.

Disliked: The kitchen has a few flies, what can you expect for 18 dollars a night. Property is well maintained, most people walk about in bare feet.

Liked: Mad Mondays is a good night out and way to meet people. And we liked the voucher for a free meal at the Woolshed each night. That's all really.

Disliked: We booked a 10 bed dorm room and our booking was not written down, so had to pay extra for a 3 bed dorm room as that was all that was left. The place was dirty and really run-down. The location is a bit out of the way. The bathrooms and kitchen were pretty disgusting and everything needs replacing. Our room felt like a prison cell and very dated. I wouldn't suggest using the swimming pool either! This is the worst hostel we have ever stayed in. You would be mad to stay there, especially as there are so many nicer hostels in Cairns!! I would recommend Global Palace as it costs the same and is clean, modern and in a central location (we moved there afterwards and loved it!!)

Liked: We atayed here for 3 nights and could easily have stayed longer. This is a really friendly hostel where it's easy to meet people - there are lots of very long-term guests which could have made the atmosphere really cliquey, but everyone was very welcoming and friendly. The free evening meal is pretty good, and Mad Monday definitely worth going along to. Yes it's a party hostel, but in the nicest way possible and with some of the nicest travellers I've met so far.

Liked: The staff are friendly and helpful. I can meet friends here and the functions "Fri BBQ" & "Mad Monday" are great and valuable! Also, I can walk to the central within 15 mins. I got a job from the staff because they will find people to works if they can get a job... that's great that I can get both fun and job here.

Disliked: the kitchen... guys please wash your dishes...

Liked: Party everyday! Not very clean. Free breakfast and free meals. The free meals are quite good and are cheap to upgrade to better meals. Definitely a good place to stay at if u like to party and meet new people.

Liked: Booked for 2 nights, ended up staying for over a week!!! Super friendly staff will help out with whatever you want, great location just 5 mins from town!!!! Excellent value for money, free meal included at a local restaurant (which is suprisingly a very good meal!) as well as free breakfast, tea and coffee and a ridiculously low room rate!!! Couldn't rate it more, STAY HERE!!!! (bring your own goon!)

Liked: Fantastic atmosphere and an amazing place to meet new people. All the staff are great fun and make everyone feel welcome. Would highly recommend this hostel to any traveller who wants to make new friends and have a great time. Loved it.

Liked: This is a great place to meet crazy- mostly drunk- friendly people. The staff are fantastic and cannot do enough for you and the atmosphere and respect for other people regrdless of your background. It is not clean at all even though they have cleaners in every day because the building itself is quite old and run down but the kitchen is very usable.I very much enjoyed my stay here but I can see how it would not be to everyones liking as it is quite crazy and noisy most of the time- take ear plugs! A lot of people who stay here end up here for a long period of time because it is so friendly and welcoming and they will look after you when you first arrive. Free breakfast is always a winner and the evening meals are a bit basic but who cares when they are free?Some of the room don't have bunk beds (only singles) too which is always great because sleeping in them can be a nightmare. I had a fab time :-)

Liked: Awesome hostel!!! great fun - all the staff and really friendly and work really hard to make sure everyone is having a good time - Ariel, Annie and Adam your awesome! Free food (who can complain???) and a wicked (and cheap) bbq every friday. A real party hostel so you wont be bored loads of areas to chill on your own or get to know other travellers. I would recommend this hostel to anyone thinking of staying in cairns long or short term. Great atmosphere keep it up guys :)

Liked: I stayed @ the Asylum for a while and I had the best time of my life. The people there are just amazing. Mad Monday is so funking great... I will miss it!People who stay there are real party people...there are no place like this.the BBQ on Friday is only $4 and it is worth the money and for sure you will be full on the end of this day :-)Every night you get a meal voucher for a meal @ Wholeshed what is mostly Pasta but you can upgrade it for a few $$$ and get huge portions. The Staff are really friendly and help where ever they can.I am sorry I had to leave this place so soon and in so a rush...thanks to all the staff (Annie, Jeremy, Rachel, Jen, etc....)I had an amazing time,I just love to stay there and will be back again :-)Take care Sandra

Liked: we had a 3 bunk private with an ensuit and it was cheap as. i couldnt get over the value, especially the friday bbq which is only 4$ (i was expecting hotdogs but instead there were chicken wings, steak and 3 different salads) and mad monday was insane. its 10$: shirt, internet for the week, a night free accomadation, and drink vouchers at the bars we visited. it was a really fun way to get to know fellow backpackers, minus the dancing on tables for me but i can see the appeal for others. and every night you get a meal voucher which is a pretty flimsy meal but you can upgrade it and get huge portions.
