Liked: I stayed at Hostel Independencia for tow nights in April 2009 in a 6-bed dormitory. I don't really understand where it gets its excellent reviews from, so I will write my own.The dormitory was ok, no frills, but good enough. The common toilet/badroom was quite dirty (you can't throw your toilet paper down the pipe, but have to drop it in a dustbin, and if the dustbin isn't cleaned every couple of hours..go figure) and rather far away from my dormitory (I had to cross the whole hostel). The staff was friendly though and they have a double-locked safe for your private stuff. Breakfast was ok, again, no frills. Too few internet spots (only two, so there was always a queue) and the comps were damn slow. :-(I was rather busy, so I didn't really socialize, but it seems it is easy to meet up with people, since there are plenty of public spaces and every now and then they organise an "asado". Conclusion: it's ok if you don't have high hopes.

Liked: Staff were friendly and helpful, free breakfast was good and hostel had a sociable atmosphere. only real downsides were fact that showers were on separate floor and that rooms are left unlocked - you have a large locker to put valuables in though.

Liked: The hostel has a great location in the centre of town and has a fun team of local guys working there who know all abaout the social life of the area. The travel and tour service is outstanding for those wanting to do everything from taking a wine tour to climbing Aconcagua. We had a great asado on New Year's Eve, superbly cooked for us. Security lockers are managed by the staff, but there are no individual ones. This is not a wild party hostel but a great fun place for people of all ages to enjoy themselves.

Liked: Great location, but the washrooms were rather off. Rooms were spacious, nice mattress. Not as clean as other hostels I have stayed in. Over-all pritty good.

Liked: Generally a nice location with bar area, but bad matresses and not much space in the dorms. Private double quite uninspiring.

Liked: Located right by the major square, which had artisans there almost every night and was a nice place to hang out (however a lot of the other hostels were a bit farther out, but closer to the park and main street with all the bars). The did offer tons of different excursions which was a plus. However, the place often seemed a bit and the courtyard outside was a bit prisonyard like (in the eyes of a few of the people staying there). Security was good: they had a big gate to the main door that you had to be buzzed through and big lockers, which were not in the rooms, but operated with a double lock system (one set of lockers per room with a lock that only the staff could open and then you used your own lock to lock up your stuff - so dont forget a lock! - you can get one at the supermarket Carrefour whcih isnt far away). Kitchen was large and was fairly well stocked (plenty of dishes, etc, altho the pans were a bit "well used"). It was a good hostel to relax in, with satellite TV and places to relax, but if you are looking for fun, I would head to the bar street!
