The Weather in Chicago

It might be known as the Windy City, but actually Chicago’s no windier that other major US cities.  But the weather can be temperamental and Chicagoans are fond of saying, “if you don't like the weather, just wait ten minutes” and it will change!

Temperatures can vary massively in springtime (March-May), swinging from sunny mornings to rainy afternoons in an instant so be sure to pack an umbrella. Although unlikely, snowstorms are still possible up to early April. Average temperatures in spring range from 6°C to 17°C.

Summer (June-August) is the most popular time to visit Chicago and generally means warm and sunny days with cool breezes coming in from Lake Michigan. There’s always a chance of high humidity, but extreme heat waves are rare.  Average temperatures in the summer range from 16°C to 28°C.

Chicago generally has cool and crisp autumns (September-November) with plenty of clear days, perfect for spending outdoors. There’s usually less rainfall in autumn than the rest of the year. Average temperatures in autumn range from 4°C to 15°C.

Winter months (December-February) in Chicago can be bitterly cold and are often filled with snow and ice. Snowfall happens every year, but March usually sees a few sunny days. Average temperatures in the winter range from -1°C to -9°C.
