Things to Do in Venezuela

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Venezuela? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Angel Falls

The highest free-falling freshwater waterfalls in the world tower above the Canaima National Park at a dizzying height of 2,648 feet. American aviator James 'Jimmie' Crawford Angel brought the falls to the western world's attention in the 30s, landing his plane at the top in 1936. Interestingly, the native Pemon Indian name is slightly less heavenly – 'Aiyan-tepui', or 'Devil's Mountain'!

2. Sierra de Perija National Park

Another imposing feature of the Venezuelan landscape, the park gives birth to most of the country's rivers, as well as housing some of its most amazing flora and fauna, including Capuchin and Howler Monkeys, and the brilliantly-named Spectacled Bear. Organized tours are available, while camping below the mountains (which soar to 3,500 meters high), is also permitted.

3. Museo del Arte Colonial

Before its liberation by Simon Bolivar, Venezuela endured almost 300 years of European colonization. Inside the beautiful Quinta Anauco mansion sit intricately reconstructed colonial rooms and artifacts, with fountains lining the pristine surrounding gardens.

4. El Teleferico

A cable car ascent of 2,585-meter high Cerro El Avila offers breathtaking views of Caracas. Exhausted travelers can relax in the Hotel Humboldt, while the more energetic can glide around the ice rink or dance the night away in what must be one of the highest clubs in the world.

5. Los Llanos

Once home to the intrepid llanero cowboys, the vast plains stretch further than the eye can see, and are completely transformed by the changing of the seasons. During the rainy season, much of the region is underwater, with some unforgettable sights provided during sunset. The dry season sees the animal population converging with capybaras, jaguars, foxes and crocodiles all living (at least vaguely!) contentedly alongside one another.
