Want to know some of the standout things to do in New York City? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. The Brooklyn Brownstones
Sometimes the essence of a city is not in its must-see monuments but in its distinct districts and areas. Brooklyn is the archetypal New York neighborhood and its familiar brownstone terraces are a defining part of the cityscape.
2. Head for the Heights
In order to climb the Empire State Building, you may have to queue for what seems like an eternity and be subjected to rigorous security checks. But once you're up there, the views of the city stretched out below are well worth it.
3. Make Straight for the Staten Island Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry gives unbeatable views of the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, lower Manhattan and the soaring skyscrapers of Wall Street. And the best thing? IT'S FREE!
4. Grab a Dog or Slice on the Go
Sure, there are lots of classy restaurants in New York but it's also a city that's always on the move. If you want to be too, pick up a choice something or other from a street vendor and if you fancy something a little more ethnic, head for East Village or(naturally) Chinatown.
5. Gaze at the Queensboro Bridge
One of the most emblematic views of the city is from Sutton Place Park overlooking the Queensboro Bridge (as shot in glorious black and white in Woody Allen's Manhattan). The famous bench might not be there any more but the bridge and the gleaming city behind it most certainly are.
