World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest - USA

When: 14 May 2010 - 16 May 2010

The organizers proclaim this event to be the Super Bowl of pig grills - and it certainly is a meat lovers’ paradise! In May, visitors say a sweet-smelling cloud of smoke hovers over Memphis during the cook-off, with hickory pork and flavors of tomato, mustard and vinegar all wafting up into the sky.

The Barbecue Championship is held in Tom Lee Park close to the center of Memphis. Visitors tend to dress in a crazy manner and even attempt to make their grills look special. Don't be surprised to encounter a barbecue made to look like a fire truck, an aeroplane or even a pig!

More than 90,000 people turn up for the cook-off every year and Tom Lee Park becomes extremely busy with a great many people eating large amounts of pork. There’s also a musical area called the Sharp Stage, which puts on bands throughout the festival.

Then there’s the truly unique Miss Piggy Competition. Bizarrely, this involves grown men attempting to make themselves look as much like Miss Piggy as possible. It's worth a look just to laugh at the poor, unfortunate souls who stepped up to take part.
