Night Falls in Times Square
Times Square New Year's Eve Celebration - USA
When: 31 December 2009
America’s largest New Year’s celebration is a remarkable occasion. There are hour by hour countdowns, various performances by big names in the entertainment business and between one and two million people packed into the streets in and around Times Square.
As you’d expect on New Year’s Eve, people eat, drink and make merry as the atmosphere grows increasingly electric. Then, as the New Year approaches, a (thunderously loud) countdown leads the revelers through the final 30 seconds of the year.
At 11.59pm, a giant crystal ball begins its descent down the flagpole at the top of One Times Square. When it reaches the bottom and the clock strikes midnight, the whole area erupts with an explosion of confetti and a huge fireworks display.
When it comes to New Year’s celebrations, no one else does it quite like New York.
