Sundance Film Festival

 Set Up at Sundance

Sundance Film Festival - USA

When: 15 January 2010 - 25 January 2010

In many ways, Sundance is an anomaly within the film world. Film festivals tend to be big, glitzy affairs where the stars congregate and the public rarely get closer to the big screen than the barricaded red carpet outside.

Sundance is similar, but also quite different. Every year, the Hollywood bigwigs and brightest stars do certainly gather here. The festival showcases independent work and big production companies are always on the lookout for the hippest new shorts.

However, Sundance is also a mainstay of the individual film enthusiast. Being free, it’s a world away from the lofty self-regard of the Cannes or Venice festivals. Run by a non-profit organization, the program is extensive and, more importantly, open to the general public.

Sundance takes place over three sites within Utah during January; there’s a site in Salt Lake City, in Ogden, and in the ski resort of Sundance itself (which, admittedly, is a little more highflying and full of bigwigs than the others).

Over the years, the festival has showcased the first films of a number of now well-known directors including Jim Jarmusch, Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino. And there’s no reason why the stars of the future won’t be debuting at Sundance this year.

It's always a noteworthy experience to be able to say that you saw a bestselling director's very first film back when they weren't famous…
