San Francisco Pride - USA
When: 26 June 2010
San Francisco Pride is one of the world’s largest – and wildest – Gay Pride events. Taking place every year during the last weekend of June, the festival includes an assortment of parades, parties and vendors, each filling the city’s streets with their own inimitable style.
The central parade on the Saturday night is probably the event’s standout attraction. Over a million onlookers gather along the streets and special viewing platforms as a procession of various ‘contingents’ (including ‘Dykes on Bikes’, ‘Leather’ and ‘PFLAG’) proceed past.
Traditionally beginning at Market and Second, the huge parade makes its way to the civic center in the heart of San Francisco. As the day wears on, the City Hall becomes the venue for an all-night party for the parade’s various participants.
Meanwhile, an independent ‘Dykes’ March’ and Pink Saturday event take place around Castro Street. With protestors at the events becoming increasingly sparse, this uniquely exuberant exhibition of tolerance is set to continue to thrive.
