The switching on of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lights is regarded as the beginning of the holiday season by many New Yorkers. The site itself is a magnet for travelers and locals alike with its array of shops and restaurants.
The event is always done with a grandeur and glamour befitting such a mammoth tree and residents come out in huge numbers to watch. Around 25,000 multicolored lights are switched on during the show - the light is so bright that the surrounding walls seem to turn to gold.
The show takes place between 19:00 and 21:00 local time in Manhattan, with a star-studded line-up of musical talent. Celebrities are never far away as America's most glamorous pop stars take to the stage to celebrate the beginning of the festive season.
