Merrie Monarch Festival - USA
When: 04 April 2010 - 10 April 2010
Palm trees, coconuts and hula girls - the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hawaii is the ideal place to relax and enjoy a show! This traditional hula competition takes place during April and sees local girls competing to win the prized accolade.
Festivities kick off on Coconut Island, or "Moku Ola" as it’s known in Hawaii, and a free exhibition night at the Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo on Hawaii Island provides a background to the tradition.
As a big parade meanders through the streets to mark the end of the festival, the locals commemorate King David Kalakaua. Known as the ‘Merrie Monarch’, he inspired the event and was a great supporter of Hawaii's art and culture.
