Things to Do in Montevideo

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Montevideo? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. The Ciudad Vieja

Montevideo’s Old Town is an atmospherically crumbling mass of streets where grand old colonial houses lie silent and empty. Down on street level, however, neighborhood shops and cafés hum with activity, and the city is alive with people going about their business.

2. Mercado del Puerto

Down by the port, Montevideo’s Mercado del Puerto is the city’s beating heart. A scruffy, bustling market place, it’s the perfect place to pick up a choice steak or some fine seafood (at very reasonable prices) while watching the endless commercial activity ebb and flow around you.

3. Get out of the City... Hit the Beach!

Montevideo’s surrounded by some of the continent’s best beaches – a welcome respite from the sweltering summer temperatures. A short journey to the east brings you to the smart beach towns of Maldonado and Punta del Este.

4. Check out the Casa de Rivera

The Casa de Rivera (near the Plaza de la Constitucion) is home to one of the more intriguing collections of antiquities and artifacts in South America. The focus is on the history of Uruguay – ancient and modern – with a suitably wide range of objects on display.

5. See the Sun Rise on Sarandi

Like most places in South America, a night out in Montevideo can be a pretty lengthy affair. The area around Plaza Independencia is lined with bars and there’s a concentration of places on Bartolome Mitre and Peatonal Sarandi. For a taste of authentic Uruguayan culture, ‘boliches’ (music clubs) can be found across town.
