Things to Do in Uganda
Want to know some of the standout things to do in Uganda? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Mountain Gorilla Trekking, Bwindi National Park
With a total population of fewer than 700, a chance to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is an incredibly rare privilege. As such, Bwindi National Park’s five gorilla groups can only be seen on pre-booked tours.
2. Mount Elgon, Mount Elgon National Park
Africa's eighth largest mountain is also the site of one of the world's largest calderas. Crossing this inactive volcano is safe, and it boasts a stunning collection of small waterfalls and hot springs en route to the peak. Historically, its caves were inhabited by the Elgonyi Tribe, and are now visited by elephants in search of salt deposits.
3. Uganda Museum, Kampala
Although not exactly the largest collection of exhibits in the world, Kampala's Uganda Museum does offer the (slightly unusual) opportunity to have a go at playing the indigenous Ugandan musical instruments on show.
4. Kasubi Tombs, Kampala
Built in 1882, this traditional hilltop burial site is the last resting place of four Baganda Kings. Rebuilt by King Kabaka Mutesa I, the thatched building is an impressive construction: over 30 meters in diameter and nearly 8 meters tall.
5. White-water Rafting, River Nile
The potential of the River Nile as a white-water rafting spot has only recently begun to be realized, a novelty factor which merely adds to the sense of adventure tied up in tackling the river. The trip is not for the faint-hearted, however, with one half kilometer section comprised of a succession of class four and five rapids!
