Getting Around Bangkok: Transport Tips and Advice

Transport in Bangkok

The streets of the city center are almost invariably too crowded to make traveling by taxi financially viable, and walking for any distance during the summer months can be energy-sapping.

The best way of getting around Bangkok is – once you’ve got your head round its enormous network – by bus. Despite not covering the city quite so comprehensively, the subway and the city’s Skytrain offer efficient and reliable alternatives.

But, as with all things, the most efficient form of transport is by no means the most typical or romantic. Before many were filled in during the 19th century, Bangkok was riddled with canals. These days, however, most of the canals, or ‘khlongs’ as they’re known, are to be found in the Thonburi district.

Longtail boats are the best way to explore the area. The Chao Phraya Express boats are also an excellent way of getting from one side of town to another in a hurry.

As for getting to the city, both the Suvarnabhumi Airport and the older Don Muang are a fair distance away from the center of Bangkok. An express Airport Bus service is available in both instances and is neither expensive, nor particularly uncomfortable.
