Things to Do in Interlaken

There are few more dramatic settings in which to do a bungee jump than Interlaken. A couple of excellent tour companies in town offer the opportunity to dive from heights of well over 100 meters.

Interlaken may be famous for its death-defying adventure sports but there’s also something to be said for kicking back and taking it all in. A stroll around the two lakes (Interlaken literally means ‘between the lakes’) of Thun and Brienz is the perfect way to really appreciate the majesty of your surroundings.

Reached by the highest train station on the continent, the Jungfraubahn (or the ‘Top of Europe’ as it’s known) is more impressive than you could possibly imagine. Surrounded by snowy peaks surging skywards and even the odd glacier, it’s a place of unmatchable splendor.

Not far from Interlaken, near the little village of Lauterbrunnen, a mighty 400-meter waterfall thunders. And it’s by no means alone: Staubbach Falls is just one of more than seventy other spectacular falls in the valley, and the sensational falls of Truemmelbach are even closer to Interlaken.

During the warmer summer months, (in winter there’s every chance you'd have to break the ice...) there’s a wonderful natural lido at the lake area of Burgseeli. Swimming amongst the water lilies and the odd duck that paddles by is a genuinely wonderful experience.
