Overview to Interlaken: Travel Guide and Tourist Information
Set amongst the soaring peaks and deep alpine lakes of the Jungfrau Region in the Bernese Oberland, Interlaken’s location is one of the most dramatic in Switzerland. Which, naturally, makes it one of the most stunning in the whole of Europe.
The tiny town of Interlaken boasts a reputation well above its diminutive stature. And no wonder given the natural riches that surround it; the glaciers of the Eiger and the Jungfraujoch (accessible by the Jungfraubahn, Europe’s highest train station) are truly breathtaking.
It’s also encircled by fantastic hiking in the surrounding mountains. Harder Kulm and the Schynige Platte are a couple of well-marked, manageable treks, both of which provide extraordinary views of the area. A more leisurely, but no less striking, walk runs around the lakes of Thun and Brienz.
This being Switzerland, the skiing is unsurprisingly outstanding. Resorts like Beatenberg-Niederhorn, Habkern and, especially, the Jungfrau Winter Sports Region of Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen (which boasts over 200km of top runs) offer some of Europe’s finest action.
But the town doesn’t stop with such conventional outdoor pursuits. With bungee-jumping, paragliding, skydiving, canyoning and white-water rafting all available, adrenaline junkies couldn’t wish for a more complete thrill-seeking spot.
And the hordes of adventure tourists bring with them a great backpackers’ party scene that's rather at odds with such a small town. On snowy nights, the cozy little Alpine bars are typicaly heaving with skiers and snowboarders tired by, but absolutely delighted with, Interlaken’s array of attractions.
