Things to Do in Bern

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Bern? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Pound the Streets of the Old Town

Bern’s historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a wonder in its own right. As such, every inch of it should be explored.

2. Check out a Gruesome Statue

Just around the corner from the Zytglogge, the Kindlifresserbrunnen, or Ogre Fountain, is truly one of the world’s most gory statues. It’s not everyday you see a statue that depicts an ogre eating a baby…

3. Go for a Dip in the River Aare

On hot summer days, join the city’s inhabitants as they go for a long, lazy drift down the river. Starting upstream at the Marzili pools and let the current take you. Probably not recommended in winter!

4. Go Round the House of a Genius

Einsteinhaus, the former residence of the genius, was where the world-changing theories of relativity were devised.

5. Market Day

Bern has a number of excellent markets that are usually held on the Weisenhausplatz. But one in particular stands out (for novelty value) – the Zibelemarit, or Onion Fair. Taking place in the last week of November, this is a celebration of all things onion-related.
