Bern Nightlife: Places and Districts to Go Out in Bern

Eating and Drinking in Bern

For a quaint (and relatively small) city, Bern has a surprisingly decent nightlife which is based around a handful of lively bars and a number of live music venues playing everything from classical music to contemporary rock and disco.

When it comes to drinking, Bern seems to embrace Swiss culture’s German heritage with animated Bavarian-style beer halls (complete with wooden benches and local brews) scattered across the center of the Old Town.

East of the center and along the river, the Matte neighborhood is home to the city’s trendiest cocktail bars and dance/house music clubs. Although there isn’t a huge choice, the streets have a pleasant buzz as most of the venues are clustered together.

A more alternative scene can be found around the Reitschule to the north of the Old Town. Once the site of political unrest, this area attracts artists, activists and plenty of live shows.

The Arts Centre on Marzilistrasse down by the river also hosts regular concerts. For theater lovers, there’s a good range of shows on offer around the Old Town, from the big productions held at them Stadttheater on Kornhausplatz to smaller establishments that put on fringe performances.
