Getting Around Stockholm: Transport Tips and Advice

Trains Across the Islands

The cheapest way of getting into the city from Arlanda, Stockholm’s main airport, involves a bus to Marstra followed by a commuter train. The Arlanda Express train is far less laborious - taking only 20 minutes, and leaving directly from the airport - but it’s costly in comparison.

Bromma Airport and Vasteras Airport serve domestic and budget flights, and are both connected to the city through coach links. Vasteras, however, is a little way out of town and the journey can take over an hour.

The best way to get around Stockholm is to hit the streets on foot, as it only takes about 25 minutes to cross the city center. For longer ventures, there’s an efficient and comprehensive public transport system.

Stockholm's Lokaltrafik (SL) operates a large network of buses and trains (including a metro), which stretches well outside the inner city. You can get timetables, information and a useful transport map in the SL-Center, inside T-Centralen.

The quickest of the transport systems is the T-bana or Tunnelbana metro which is based on three main lines. For traveling on more than a few lines, you can buy a strip of twenty transferable SL RabattKuponger (ticket coupons) or a day-pass for one or more days.

Although providing a decent enough service, buses can be a less direct way of getting around Stockholm due to the nature of its island layout. For a really scenic trip, on the other hand, ferries provide links between some of the central islands.
