Things to Do in Sri Lanka

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Sri Lanka? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura

This medieval city was once the island's capital and has lots of grand-looking ruins to prove it. Even in its dilapidated state, this elegant remnant of a bygone era oozes beauty and cultural and religious sophistication.

2. The Cave Temples of Dambulla

Also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, this 100BC structure houses well-preserved art and sculpture dating back to the Anudhapura period. A series of ceiling paintings depict Buddhist mythology, while the cave itself is home to the largest, united collection of Buddha statues.

3. National Museum, Colombo

A fascinating (and occasionally terrifying!) look into Sri Lanka's history. Examples of Buddhist art sit alongside ancient pottery, cultural relics and European artifacts in a detailed overview of Sri Lanka's tumultuous past.

4. Sigiriya City

This vast palace complex (built from 477 to 495 AD) is perhaps the most dramatic of the seven World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka. The ‘mirror wall’ is covered in inscriptions dating back to the 8th century and the water, cave and boulder gardens are genuinely inspiring.

5. Yala West National Park

This 100,000 hectare park is famous for having the highest density of leopards in the world. Other animals include crocodiles, the sloth bear, buffalo, spotted deer and an impressive population of elephants.
