Whether it’s down to a large student population, the countless backpackers who make the city their home or the historically anarchic streak that runs through the city, nightlife in Granada is unexpectedly wild.
The center of the nightlife scene in Granada is undoubtedly the lively Calle Eshevira (running parallel to the main street, Gran Via de Colon). As the week passes, the shot bars and tiny music venues get increasingly busy until they explode into a messy, noisy, and thoroughly drunken, weekend.
On warm summer nights, the Paseo de los Tristes really comes alive when the terraces are packed - often with sangria-swilling visitors. Up the hill, the Albayzin is the place to go for a really romantic night of tapas and drinks with remarkable views of the illuminated Alhambra.
There are a couple of hip bars and clubs down in the university district surrounding the Plaza de la Universidad. Here, and around the nearby Plaza de la Trinidad, many places don’t open until midnight and the scene (like much of Granada) is an alternative, youthful one.
To the far south of the city, Calle Pedro Antonio de Alarcon is a lurid smear of shot bars and cheesy discos. Many of them are cheap and a lot of fun, however, and some are bizarrely grand, themed affairs with faux columns and statues among the pool tables and blaring TVs.
For a city famous for its flamenco, it can be incredibly difficult to actually find anything worth the name. There are plenty of (expensive) lackluster offerings up in Sacromonte that cater for the bussed-in tour groups but few authentic ‘peñas’ (clubs).
Nowadays, the caves of Sacromonte are home to a couple of the city’s livelier bars where licensing hours seem to be flagrantly ignored and the partying can carry on well after daylight.
Like everything else in the city, a night out in Granada is defined, first and foremost, by the element of surprise. Strange things can happen – and frequently do – on a night out in the slightly unhinged and utterly bewitching city which sits in the shadow of the Alhambra.
