Getting Around Bilbao: Transport Tips and Advice

Bilbao has a fantastic public transportation service which is clean, punctual and easy to use. Metro Bilbao (the underground system) runs two punctual lines connecting the metropolitan area.

It’s open from early morning until 11pm Sunday and Monday to Thursday, or untill 2am on Fridays and for 24hrs on Saturdays. Tickets can be bought at machines in the station. As with most places, if you’re going to be using the train more than once, a multi-use ticket ('creditan') is advisable.

Above ground, there is an extensive bus system consisting of 43 separate lines that access all areas of the city. Alternatively, the tram is quaint and great for sightseeing. From the airport, bus number 3247 leaves for the city center every half hour, while an easier (but more expensive) option is to take a taxi.
