Things to Do in Johannesburg

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Johannesburg? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Gold Reef City

Gold Reef City is an exact replica of Johannesburg during the early 1900s. Built around the No. 14 gold mine shaft, there are fully furnished miners' houses, museum exhibits including antique clothing and children's toys, and a train that encircles the park and many shops. You can also visit the original gold mine in an elevator that goes down to 220 meters below the surface.

2. Music in Johannesburg

In the 1950s, Johannesburg was the jazz capital of Africa, while in the 1980s, the city was home to many popular punk rock acts. Today you can find great music, from traditional gospel to hard rock blaring out of the city’s bars and clubs.

3. Sterkfontein Caves

Just outside the city, are the remarkable Sterkfontein Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world.

4. See some African wildlife

Lion Park is a great place to get really ‘up close and personal’ with some exotic wildlife. The park features several prides of lions as well as some hulking rhinos.

5. On the Waterfront

The Johannesburg waterfront, aside from providing stunning views, has got a bit of something for everybody. Taking a walk along the shore is perfect for finding some top bars and restaurants in a fantastically great romantic setting.
