There are three ways to get from Cape Town International Airport to the city center. If you are renting a car, you can pick it up from the airport and drive in. Alternatively, shuttle buses can be pre-arranged or booked on the spot. They operate a door-to-door service, although your journey time will be dependent on the other passengers. For a speedy but slightly pricier alternative to the shuttle bus, there is an official taxi rank outside the airport.
Except for the city center, Cape Town is a bit too big to walk around. If you know how to drive, renting a car can be an efficient option as the roads and road signs are very easy to navigate. For non-drivers, there is public transport available. Bus and rail services cover most of the area but are not highly recommended for use after dark.
For a cheap, interesting way to get around, shared minibus taxis (a very African phenomenon) stop just about anywhere and pack in as many people as will fit in the car. Regular taxis are also available for hire from taxi stands and are the best way to get around at night.
