Things to Do in Ljubljana

Possibly Ljubljana’s premier historical site, a fortress has stood on the site of Ljubljana Castle since the 11th century. Once a prison for infamous V.I.P.s, the castle now offers a sightseeing tower, various cultural performances, and a 3D tour of the city’s history.

Chill in the only part of Ljubljana to survive the earthquake of 1895. With an appealing mishmash of cobbled streets and relaxed café-bars, the areas of Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg make for refreshing daytime exploration.

Take a morning stroll around the captivating Central Market. Stalls offering food and souvenirs meander in and out of the river arcades. Also check out the two bridges (Triple and Dragons) that sit at either end of the market and boast impressive views of the old town.

Fancy a bit of contemporary culture? Look no further than the Break 22 festival held in June. The festival seeks to explore current world issues through a program that combines scientific lectures with cross-media techno art. The result is a cool, hip and stimulating experience.

Accessible from the city via public bus or train, the Skocjan Caves are considered the finest of more than 7,000 dotted around Slovenia. With 5km of uniquely formed underground passages and waterfalls, they provide both for the casually interested traveler or the experienced caver.
