Overview to Slovenia: Travel Guide and Tourist Information
Tiny, diverse, contrasting and exciting, Slovenia is Eastern Europe at its very best. Always considered the wealthiest and most Western of the Soviet states, it has continued to prosper since establishing its independence, and is now a prime traveling destination.
Much of Slovenia’s appeal lies in its landscape; there are few countries in the world where you can ski in beautiful mountains and swim in the warm Adriatic on the same day. And since it’s sandwiched between mountains and sea, most of Slovenia is also pleasantly mild in climate.
Many of the country’s must sees are the result of its exhilarating terrain. 5km out of Divaca, and embedded deep within the windings of the Reka Rivers, the Skocjan Caves remain an undiscovered treasure.
The scenic lake of Bohinj, to the north of the caves, is equally memorable. Between the caves and the lake, Ljubljana sits as Slovenia’s proud capital. Hugging the River Ljubljanica, the city mixes medieval and Baroque architecture with café culture and party-happy locals.
Over to the east, Maribor is Slovenia’s second city. A relaxed place set amongst wine producing hills, it makes a good retreat from the hedonism of the capital. The nearby town of Ptuj (the oldest in the country) remains serenely attractive.
Slovenians are very proud of the national identity they preserved through times of Soviet intervention. Welcoming and with a pronounced sense of fun, they alone provide sufficient reason to travel around this wonderfully understated, ruggedly beautiful country.
