Hot Coals
Fire Walking at Thimithi - Singapore
When: 01 October 2009 - 31 October 2009
Walking on hot coals in the early hours of the morning may not seem like the typical thing to do in Singapore but it is the centerpiece of the Thimithi Festival which is held every year in October.
Barefooted locals walk across the coals in honor of a Hindu goddess along a path near the Sri Mariamman Temple. The coals are lit in the evening and, although the walking does not begin until the early morning, it quickly becomes crowded as locals arrive for the lighting of the coals.
Visitors to the temple will witness an intense spectacle of mind over matter and enhanced concentration. But the festival is also an undeniably spiritual and utterly unforgettable experience.
