Things to Do in Inverness

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Inverness? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Mount a Monster Hunt on Loch Ness!

It’s not just the legend of the monster lurking in its icy depths that makes Loch Ness one of the most atmospheric of the world’s great lakes. It’s the mist that rolls down from the hills, the ruined Urquhart Castle that sits solemnly on the banks and the sense of mystery and romance which surrounds it…

2. Take a Stroll along the Caledonian Canal

Starting in the outskirts of the city, the Caledonian Canal is a fantastic feat of engineering that runs from Inverness in the east through the Great Glen to Fort William. Walking its entire 60 miles might be a bit of a stretch (even with the magnificent views of Ben Nevis), but a quick saunter is well worth the effort.

3. Check out some Caber Tossing!

In addition to caber tossing (throwing a big log for the uninitiated…), the Inverness Highland Games in July – one of the largest events of its kind – has Highland Dancing displays, pipe competitions and, of course, one big party.

4. Fort George and Culloden

Walk the imposing battlements and fortifications of Fort George before moving on to the atmospheric battlefield of Culloden where the Jacobite Rebellion came to its rather sad end. A convenient history double-bill.

5. Sink a Pint (or two) of ‘Heavy’

Scottish beer is a little different to the stuff you’ll find south of the border. For a true taste of Scotland, order an ‘Eighty Shillings’ (appearing on the tap as 80/-), universally referred to as a pint of ‘Heavy’.
