The Glasgow of old was known for having little more to offer visitors in the way of nightlife than a snooty hotel bar or run-down neighborhood pub. But these days, Glasgow is the very definition of an up-and-coming city.
As you’d expect in a city of three universities, much of the nightlife is fairly student-orientated. Bars in the West End, particularly, cater primarily for the student market, and the area is home to a range of cheaper joints and reasonably priced restaurants.
A cluster of good spots can be found in the Byres Road area of town. In the center of the old town, meanwhile, Vincent Street has a number of good places, while to the southeast of the University of Strathclyde, Bell Street is another good area to head for.
Trendy modern places aside, on a cold winter’s night there’s something reassuring about the traditional Scottish pub experience. The East End still has a number of traditional pubs that offer cheap drinks and well-priced (if a bit rough and ready) food.
Most Glaswegian pubs stay open until at least midnight, with many of them also putting on live music nights in sweaty backrooms. For other more prestigious gigs, visitors should make for big venues such as the Barrowlands, the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), the Garage, the Arena, the Plaza and the Arches.
And for those looking to push on and party well into the night, Glasgow isn’t short of the odd club. The majority of these are situated in the center around the main shopping areas of Buchanan and Argyle Streets as well as around Sauchiehall Street.
When it comes to nightlife, Glasgow’s got so much to offer. From the traditional watering holes in the East End to the chic, avant-garde places to the west of the Old Town, wherever you go when the sun sets, Glasgow’s sure not to disappoint.
