1. Spend a Lifetime in Palace Square
The Dvortsovaya Ploshchad is the historic heart of St. Petersburg. It also offers enough attractions to keep a small army of backpackers happy for months on end. Some selected highlights include St. Isaac’s Cathedral with its magnificent domes, and the baroque Winter Palace which contains the world-famous Hermitage art-museum.
2. Two Little Birds and a Huge Fortress
The Peter and Paul Fortress imposes its huge structure on the Neva River. There’s a Cathedral in this immense Citadel. And there’s also a prison, which housed Dostoevsky, Gorky and Trotsky amongst others. Visit, but try to avoid staying as long as they did…
3. Shop in the Souvenir Market
A great tourist spot on the Griboedov canal where you can sift through a barrage of matryoshka dolls and soviet paraphernalia. Buy presents for others, or indulge yourself.
4. Patter Away in Peterhof
With a series of Palaces and Gardens, the complex at Peterhof is both beautiful and interesting. Stunning surroundings and cascading waterfalls make for a romantic setting. So plan a day, and a partner, and enjoy.
5. The White Lights of the White Nights
Twilight lingers throughout the night during May and June in St. Petersburg. And what better way to celebrate this gorgeous freak of nature than a festival of classical music, opera and ballet? Twinkling light, cultural displays, historic settings – perfect!
