Want to know some of the standout things to do in Moscow? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. The Red Square
The Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum, St. Basil’s Cathedral, a history of military activity and regal proclamations – this spot literally has it all. So take a day – or a few – and explore, experience and encounter everything the immense square has to offer.
2. Art and History in the Tretiakov Gallery
The Tretiakov Gallery offers a great way of accessing historical Russia through its art. With an extensive collection housed across two buildings, the life and times of a country are covered here – from the pre-medieval Theotokos of Vladimir to the contemporary times of Malevich and Kandinsky.
3. Tour the Parks
Moscow has an amazingly high concentration of impressive public parks for such a large city. Check out the family-fun at Gorky Park, the open-air amphitheatre in the Neskuchniy Gardens or the massive expanse at Ismaylovskiy Park
4. Paint the Town Red – or Purple
Here’s one for the drinkers. Some of Moscow’s best nightlife spots are dotted along the Metro’s purple line. So get ready for a big one and crawl along the line, stopping off at each station to enjoy a drink or two. It goes without saying that you’ll be sticking to the vodka.
5. Follow the Writers’ Trail
Moscow has been the site of incredible literary action over the years. Get those Russian Realist novels out and do a writers’ tour of the city. There’s Dostoevsky’s house, a Tolstoy museum, a Pushkin monument, Chekhov’s grave – and that’s just for starters!
