Overview to Moscow: Travel Guide and Tourist Information

The Center of Moscow

This ancient city so full of stirring grace, elegance and intrigue is still a relatively new destination for travelers. Which makes Moscow's contradictions all the more confusing and occasionally troubling but, most of all, incredibly exhilarating.

There are few places in the world where history – both recent and ancient – is so immediate and relevant. Ever since the city was founded in the 11th century, Moscow has been wracked by one turbulent period after another.

In keeping with this tumultuous past, inspiring sights abound at every turn – even the subway stations are there to be appreciated by backpackers! The most iconic symbol of Russia, and undoubtedly the first place to head for, is the Red Square.

Of its many striking monuments, the most famous is probably St Basil's Cathedral and its multi-colored onion dome; the picture-postcard image of Moscow. Nearby, the Kremlin rises moodily above the skline; a city within a city that’s shrouded in myth and legend.

Lenin's mausoleum isn’t a trip for the faint-hearted. The body of the founder of the Soviet state is embalmed and on display for visitors in a crystal casket – although many have alleged that it’s actually a wax copy.

Away from the Red Square, the Kitay-Gorod quarter stretches attractively eastwards. To the south of the river, meanwhile, Zamoskvareche contains the outstanding Tretyakov Galleries and the famous Gorky Park.

Elsewhere in the city, Izmaylovo market (in Tagaka) is an endlessly fascinating source of knickknacks, Soviet souvenirs and artworks. Beyond there to the east lie the lavish palaces and fortified monasteries that are the main draw of Zayauze.

While some hold the extreme temperatures to count against the city, winter is actually the best time to visit Moscow. The soaring towers of its imposing cityscape seem somehow at their most natural state set against a leaden sky with snow swirling about them…
