The White Nights Festival - Russia
When: 10 May 2009 - 27 July 2009
Named after the ceaseless sunlight hours of St. Petersburg’s summer, The White Nights Festival celebrates Russia’s rich history of excellence in the performing arts.
For much of May, June and July, the Mariinsky theatre hosts opera, ballet and classical performances of the highest order. Led by the Kirov Opera and Ballet troupe under the ever-impressive guidance of Valery Gergiev, the festival remains a mainstay in any diary of ‘high’ culture.
The festival reaches its pinnacle on the day of the Scarlet Sails. A celebration of the end of the school year and the continuing achievement of St. Petersburg’s artistic sphere, the event is always a happy mix between party and pure Russian romance.
