Getting Around Porto: Transport Tips and Advice

An Antique Tram in Porto

The AeroBus runs from the Sa Carneiro airport to the Avenida dos Aliados in the town center (and back) every 30 minutes from 7am to 6:30pm. A ticket is relatively inexpensive and doubles up as a free bus pass until midnight on the day you buy it.

Once in the city, getting around in Porto is remarkably easy, as you can take advantage of the metro, tram, and bus systems. The newly expanded and upgraded Metro system has four finished lines – blue, green, yellow and red – that take you across the city.

Central hubs of Porto’s extensive bus system include Jardim da Cordoaria, Praça de Liberdade and Sao Bento station. Tickets are cheapest at STCP kiosks and at shops and tobacconists. Prices range from next-to-nothing for a short trip, to moderately cheap for the return airport journey. A two-day pass is also available for visitors.

Porto also has one of the oldest tram systems in Europe and it's well worth catching a ride on tram No. 18 which runs along the river to the seafront, boasting some fabulous views along the way.
