Things to Do in Peru
Want to know some of the standout things to do in Peru? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Machu Picchu
With half a million visitors every year, the 'Lost City' is Peru's most popular tourist attraction. Constructed 7,000 feet above sea level in around 1450, the city was occupied for just 100 years, before the Inca Empire collapsed.
Spectacularly located high up in the mountains, Cusco offers an evocative representation of ancient Peruvian life. Once the capital of Peru, the city's highlights include the beautiful Temple of San Blas and pre-Colombian monuments such as the Korikancha (Temple of the Sun) and Amaru Cancha (Fence of the Serpent).
3. Puerto Maldanado
There are three conservation areas within the park: the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, the Manu Biosphere Reserve and the Tambopata-Candamo Reserve, and all offer a fascinating glimpse into Amazonian life.
4. Catedral de Lima
Sitting in the Plaza Mayor, the cathedral's first stones were laid by Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish conquistador who founded the city. Though built in 1555, numerous earthquakes have demanded major reconstruction, with the most recent work in 1746. It is bordered by 15 ornate chapels, one of which houses Pizarro's remains.
5. Parque de las Leyendas
The main zoo in the Peruvian capital, the park hosts an amazing array of creatures, from the more traditional zoo inhabitants to native Peruvian species, such as the caiman, alpaca and condor.
