Things to Do in Asuncion

Want to know some of the standout things to do in Asuncion? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...

1. Party… Paraguayan style

As with most of the cities of Central and South America, the people of Asuncion know how to have a good night out. Around Plaza de Uruguay and Plaza de los Heroes, there are a number of restaurants where you can fill up before the nearby bars open and things start to get a little wilder

2. Escape the Heat at Lake Ypacarai

Landlocked Paraguay can become unbearable during the summer months. To get away from the pollution and heat of Asuncion, take a bus out to Lake Ypacarai, strip off and jump in the water.

3. Get to Grips with Guarani

In addition to Spanish (and in many places instead of…), the Paraguayans speak Guarani, an indigenous language. Asuncion, the biggest and most cosmopolitan city, is the place to try out a few basic phrases if you’re looking to make a few people smile as you explore the wilds of Paraguay.

4. Try a Tereré

As the heat of the day begins to take a hold, slip into a shady café and order a tereré, an iced herbal tea. They serve an important social function, too, with people regularly sitting down to address the issues of the day over one.

5. Stay for San Blas Day

San Blas is the patron saint of Paraguay, and his day (3rd February) is met with a typically Hispanic mixture of solemn masses and raucous partying.
