Panama City has seen a number of influences from surrounding countries and, although it's still possible to enjoy plenty of bean-and-chilli Central American staples, the cuisine has a much more Caribbean flavor.
In general, eating out in the city is very reasonable and there are a host of great restaurants where travelers on a budget can sample some hearty traditional dishes - mainly featuring chicken or delicious fresh seafood (thanks to the coastal location).
Indian, Italian and French eateries are also plentiful, and it's here that vegeterians are mostly like to find suitable offerings as local cuisine tends to be centered around meat.
There are some local beers (with 'Balboa' the most popular) but Panama's rum is by far superior. White rum, known as 'seco' is drunk throughout the capital and guarantees a lively night out...
The Calle Uruguay, El Amador and Causeway areas are all great spots for a lively evening. There are a number of bars and clubs packed together in these districts, which is both convenient and safe for travelers heading on a night out.
From wine bars and cocktails to atmospheric jaxx (in Casco Viejo), Panama City has a quite surprising array of options when it comes to nightlife. Whilst the scene may not be as sophisticated as some, lashings of cheap local rum and the city's modern vibe make for an excellent experience.
