Things to Do in Nicaragua
Want to know some of the standout things to do in Nicaragua? Then have a look through our handpicked suggestions below...
1. Leon Viejo, Leon
This atmospherically ruined town is one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements, and an intriguing example of European design applied to a new climate, terrain and set of materials. It’s over-shadowed by the great Momotombo Volcano, which left it preserved in ash until it was rediscovered in 1967.
2. Momotombo Volcano, Lake Managua
This impressive kilometer-high smoking volcano is part of Central America's impressive volcanic chain, stretching over more than 50 peaks. Sitting next to Lake Managua, it still offers hiking tours despite being listed as active. It’s totally safe, though, not having erupted since 1905!
3. Centro de Arte, Managua
A strange mix of historical photos and paintings grace the walls of this unknown gem. An eclectic mix of art includes several Picasso paintings as well as an impressive array of 17th century Nicaraguan art.
4. The Museum of Legends and Traditions, Leon
A great place to learn about the weird and wonderful side of Nicaragua. This 1921 building was once a prison – which seems appropriate given the eerie nature of its contemporary educational contents.
5. Zona Rosa, Managua
This stretch of restaurants, bars and clubs has grown very quickly over the last ten years, and is a great place for hedonistic backpackers. Clubs stay open late, charge next to nothing for entry, and are full to bursting most nights of the week with a giddy assortment of local students and travelers.
