Competitors Swim to the Shore

The Ironman event in New Zealand is the longest running international Ironman on the globe – which seems fitting when the athletes have to complete a rather long run themselves! Competitors taking part must do a 2.5-mile swim, a 110-mile bike ride and a marathon during the week-long event in March.
Officials and organizers are on-hand to provide athletes with everything they need, from massages to equipment talks and preparation sessions. Locals, family and friends come out in force to support the competitors as they pit themselves against this grueling endurance test.
Although the course is obviously demanding, it's also one of the most picturesque in the world. The swimming event takes place in crystal-clear freshwater and the bike ride is held on quiet tree-lined roads.
