Getting to Amsterdam is no problem – Schiphol Airport is one of the busiest in the world and is well-served by numerous low-cost airlines. Once on the ground, a train line is on hand to whisk you to the city center. Trains leave frequently and the journey only takes about 15 minutes.
By capital city standards, Amsterdam is small and easy to get around. The center, with most of the best sites, accommodation and nightlife, is easily covered on foot. The best place from which to start a walking tour is Dam Square, at the intersection of Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk shopping streets.
From there you can walk in any direction and weave in and out of the various alleyways and canals. If you don’t fancy pounding the pavements, GVB provides the city with a well coordinated metro, tram and bus service that stretches across Amsterdam and offers inexpensive one-day cards.
However, the best and most popular way of getting around Amsterdam is by bicycle. You can rent bikes for a relatively small fee at various companies across the city. There are actually more bicycles than citizens in Amsterdam so you have to constantly keep your wits about you when crossing the street!
