1. The Zocalo
The Zocalo, one of the largest squares in the world, is the heart of Mexico City, built right over the center of the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. Aside from the awe-inspiring ruins, there are several terrific colonial buildings, including the Palacio National, and works by Diego Rivera.
2. Tackle the Tequila!
While sometimes relegated to ‘party booze’ status, tequila has enjoyed a renaissance lately with distillers making high-quality spirits and putting a lot of effort into making it sophisticated again. Plus, tequila is Mexico’s national liquor, so you’ve got to partake - even if it’s a small amount!
3. La Merced
Even if you’re not buying anything, you could spend all day here browsing the wares, from hanging chilies to herbal medicine. Le Merced is Mexico City’s largest market and offers great deals on food, furniture and various other unique fare courtesy of the thousands of vendors situated there.
4. Museo Nacional de Antropologia
Located in Chapultepec Park, Mexico’s finest museum houses a massive collection of dozens of galleries dedicated to bringing ancient Mexican culture to life.
5. Xochimilco
Xochimilco – a stunning series of canals and floating gardens – offers a carnival-type atmosphere every weekend. You can rent a boat cheaply and boatmen will ferry you around while you’re propositioned by floating vendors selling food, flowers and beer. It’s bound to stand out as one of your most memorable experiences in Mexico City.
