The Day of the Dead - Mexico

When: 01 November 2009 - 30 November 2009

Although the ‘Day of the Dead’ is recognized by many communities worldwide, its most famous celebration is undoubtedly held in Mexico, where the chance to celebrate those who have died is a major day on the national calendar.

In many ways, it's hard to describe what goes on during the festival, which takes place in November. Its roots can be found in indigenous traditions and, today, the Day of the Dead is a fascinatingly complex highlight of the calendar.

Rather than mourn those who have passed away, the whole of Mexico takes a day out to clean the graves of their dead relatives and generally rejoice in their memory, as well as giving sugared skulls and ‘pan de muertos’ to the living.

Whilst festivities are likely to alter from town to town, wherever you go you’ll be met by a great wave of high spirits. One of the most important symbols is that of ‘La Catrina’ – an iconic, dandyesque, skeleton designed to show that death is the great leveler.

There’s something totally different and ultimately incredibly intriguing about Mexico’s Day of the Dead. Rarely are all the morbid characteristics of death stripped away like this: it may be a celebration of the dead, but this festival is very much alive and kicking.
