La Guelaguetza - Mexico
When: 15 July 2009 - 25 July 2009
La Guelaguetza, held every July, is one of the largest and most important cultural events in the Mexican calendar and is highly popular with locals and travelers alike. The majority of events take place in the Auditorio Oaxaca, a theatre built in 1974 which holds around 11,000 people.
The festival's origins go back to colonial times but La Guelaguetza didn't take its current form until 1932, which marked the fourth centenary of Oaxaca. La Guelaguetza is made up of legend re-enactments and traditional offerings of folk music and dance.
There's sure to be a dose of hot weather, lashings of local spirits and some fine food for all during La Guelaguetza.
