Cancun is often used by backpackers as a stopover before exploring Chichen Itza, Tulum and the wonders of the Yucatan peninsular. And so it can come as a bit of a surprise when the stunning beaches, great nightlife and friendly people seduce them into staying...
Stretched out along the Caribbean coast, Cancun is one long strip of pristine white sand and sparkling blue waters. The smarter Cancun hotels reserve spaces for the use of their guests, but there’s plenty of space to lie out on the sand.
If you're hungry after an idle morning on the beach, there are plenty of good options for eating and drinking in Cancun. Downtown is full of food stalls -like those at Mercado 23 and 28 - where cheap Mexican classics like quesadillas and tacos can be picked up for remarkably little.
In the evening, the nightlife, while not particularly sophisticated, is typically jumping. Beach bars mix with shiny new super-clubs, but it all generally ends up the same way – watching the sun come up over the ocean, before spending a day sleeping it off on the beach.
And if relaxing on the beach becomes a little tiring, the shoals of colorful fish that hang around the reefs to the south of the city make for good diving and snorkeling. A boat tour out to the mangroves or to the Isla Mujeres is another diverting way to pass the day.
Cancun, though, isn’t really about ‘doing’ anything in particular; it’s a resort town, plain and simple. And whether travelers come here to recharge for a couple of weeks with a little laziness and luxury or to explore the majesty of the Mayan ruins, it’s hard not to have a good time.
