The backpacker making their way to Mexico is seriously spoilt for choice. Away from the non-stop activity of its vibrant capital, Mexico City, the country is dotted with exquisite little colonial towns like Guanajuato and Merida to explore.
To most people, though, it’s the Mayan and Aztec cultural heritage that really makes the country stand out as a travel destination. The awe-inspiring spectacle of Chichén Itzá may stand out in most people’s minds, but the giant pyramids of Teotihuacán, the Aztec ruins of Tenochtitlán, Tulum, and the crumbling remains of Cholula are amongst countless other must-sees.
The Yucatan Peninsular is an ideal destination for its mix of culture and good, old-fashioned sun worshiping, with lively Cancun proving a particularly popular destination. Elsewhere, the warm Caribbean waters of Playa del Carmen have made it the very definition of a jumping little coastal resort town.
Although more and more intrepid travelers have been heading for the desert-like north of the country, it’s still significantly less visited than the south. One of the things that has been drawing the visitors, though, is the immense Copper Canyon – undoubtedly one of the world’s most breathtaking natural features.
Other natural wonders include the Sian Ka’an Reserve, a vast region of jungles, swamps, and, out at sea, the country’s most amazing reefs, ideal for diving. Here the emphasis is firmly placed upon sustainable development and the area is full of opportunities to take part in ecotourism schemes.
The highlight of the Mexican calendar is undoubtedly the infamous ‘Day of the Dead’ (November 1), when, right across the country, the country explodes into procession and general celebration. Ultimately, though, in a country as full of color, music and life as Mexico, anytime’s a good time to go.
