Kuala Lumpur is an insomniac’s dream: as the sun sets and the city lights up in a rainbow of colors, it feels like the day was merely a prelude to the night. An evening in Kuala Lumpur can be a long, drawn-out and downright noisy affair.
Anyone strolling around after dark will be hard-pressed not to stumble upon one of the city’s many late-night street markets. The frenetic bartering and the sounds of Asian chart music blaring out of stereos in Chinatown and Little India town create an atmosphere that’s unique to Southeast Asia and unlike anywhere in the west.
Chinatown's Central Market also plays host to a variety of free performances most evenings, from martial arts and Malay dancing through to comedy nights and shadow puppets. It's also home to the city's burgeoning gay scene.
Chinatown is, generally speaking, the cheapest place to have a few beers. If you tire of the relentless noise and activity of the markets and decide to venture out into the trendy scenes of the 'Golden Triangle' or Bangsar, be prepared to see a significant rise in the price of drinks.
One way of keeping costs to a minimum in Kuala Lumpur is the time-honored ‘happy hour’. Happy hours are all the rage in Kuala Lumpur and many places will try and lure you in with tempting offers between the hours of 17:00 and 20:00.
The cluster of venues that line the streets around Bangsar’s Jalan Telawi have become so full of partying travelers that locals refer to the area as ‘Kweiloh Lumpur’, or ‘Foreigner Lumpur’. Elsewhere in the city, the 'Golden Triangle' (around Jl Bukit Bintang) is awash with bright lights and non-stop action. Here, you’ll find the majority of the city's live music haunts, from jazz and blues to rock.
From the scruffy night markets where you can wash down a cheap meal with a beer or two to chic bars and clubs boasting great views of the sparkling modern metropolis, there are few travelers that nightlife in Kuala Lumpur can’t satisfy.
