Getting Around Kuala Lumpur: Transport Tips and Advice

Modern LRT Trains

The new Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), some 47 miles south of the city, receives all international flights. Having landed, the wonderfully fast KLIA Ekspres train will take you downtown to KL Sentral station in 28 minutes. There’s also the option of taking a taxi, where you pay for your journey up front on a coupon basis.

Getting around Kuala Lumpur on public transport is fairly straightforward in comparison to many other Asian cities. The Light Rail (LRT) and monorail services are frequent and user-friendly and provide an excellent way of seeing the whole city.

Taxi fares are fixed by the Malaysian government and drivers are obliged to put their meters on. The rates per kilometer are helpfully displayed at most cab ranks, so you can even calculate more or less what your journey will cost before you set off.

Trains in Malaysia are fast, comfortable and – most importantly – pretty cheap. KL Sentral is the hub of the country's railway network and daily services connect the capital with the rest of Malaysia, as well as Thailand and Singapore.

Buses also run from KL Sentral to other parts of Malaysia, although you may be better heading to the city's main Puduraya bus station near Chinatown.
