A Guide to Eating and Drinking in Vilnius

Local Vilnius Mushrooms

Like Lithuania as a whole - and indeed Central and Eastern Europe - eating and drinking in Vilnius is not as cheap as it used to be. But the slight upward shift in prices has also seen a general increase in the quality and variety of restauarants, bars and clubs.

Traditional Lithuanian food includes many varieties of smoked meat and fish, with eel especially popular. Potatoes are a staple food and appear in many forms, including 'bulviniai blynai' (potato pancakes) and 'cepelinai', which is grated potato with mince meat.

Travelers after a good meal on the go can head to one of the many Cili Kaimas establishments in town. These serve up good, traditional fare, and all for a very decent price. The chain also has a number of similarly priced pizza and pasta outlets, known as Cili Pica.

The nightlife in Vilnius is broken up into two camps: firstly, there are a number of cheap bars around the university area. Here, the scene is relaxed and trendy with a large percentage of students and locals and some good live music venues.

The other spot for a night out is the heart of the Old Town; home to the city's more expensive and slightly more sophisticated bars. On weekends, though, these are often given over to the raucous stag parties who have made Vilnius one of the destinations of choice for a weekend break.

If it's nightclubs you're after, the Old Town this time comes up trumps. Tucked away among the narrow old streets are any number of places where a frenetic dancing session can run on long into the early hours.
