Six miles outside Vilnius in the Paneriai forest, this somber place is the site of the Lithuanian holocaust. Visitors can visit both the memorial and a museum documenting the historical significance of the event.

An unspoilt 18 kilometer stretch of Baltic coastline, the Palanga Beach is renowned amongst savvy beach-lovering backpackers for its gorgeous sands and jumping nightlife. But most visitors neglect Palanga's other attractions such as the Botanic Park and the internationally-acclaimed Amber Museum, formerly the Tiskeviciai Palace.

This intelligently designed park takes visitors through a series of walkways resembling Siberian prison camps. Grand statues of Stalin and Lenin – figureheads of the bygone communist era – stare down at you from behind barbed wire fences.
